Formula variables

  • kW is heater output used for the estimate.
  • CFM is airflow through the heater section.
  • 1.08 is the common imperial air heat factor used for preliminary HVAC arithmetic.
  • The Celsius result converts the Fahrenheit rise for Canadian metric review.

Assumptions

  • Temperature rise is estimated from heater output and airflow using common HVAC arithmetic.
  • Airflow should be measured or taken from a reliable design value; low airflow increases temperature rise quickly.
  • Actual equipment limits, staged heaters, controls, high-limit devices, and duct conditions can override the estimate.
  • This calculator does not select duct heater equipment, airflow settings, controls, safety devices, or HVAC/electrical installation requirements.

Examples

10 kW at 1000 cfm. A 10 kW duct heater at 1000 cfm estimates about 31.6 F, or 17.6 C, temperature rise.

Low-airflow check. A 20 kW heater at 500 cfm estimates a high temperature rise and should trigger equipment and airflow review.
