Calculation note

This is a PV cold-voltage screen using entered manufacturer data and temperature assumptions. Inverter limits, module data, and project review govern final string count.

Method

Voltage rise percent = absolute temperature coefficient x (reference temperature - lowest cell temperature)

Cold string Voc = modules in series x module Voc x (1 + voltage rise percent / 100)

Voltage margin = entered maximum DC voltage - cold string Voc

Formula variables

  • Modules in series is the count in one PV string.
  • Module Voc is the open-circuit voltage at reference test conditions.
  • Temperature coefficient is entered in percent per C.
  • Maximum DC voltage is the equipment or design value being screened.

Assumptions

  • Module Voc and temperature coefficient are entered from manufacturer data.
  • Cold voltage uses the entered lowest cell temperature and reference temperature.
  • The maximum DC voltage is entered by the user for the equipment being reviewed.
  • This calculator does not design a PV array, approve equipment ratings, or replace manufacturer instructions.

Examples

Cold Canadian morning. Ten modules at 49.5 V Voc with a -0.28 percent/C coefficient and -25 C low cell temperature estimate about 564.3 V.

Equipment workflow. Use module data, inverter limits, and project temperature assumptions before final string count decisions.
